I found you sitting by the pastry store
Your soot-colored ringlets tangled atop your head
Your eyes an ember-brown
Beautiful
Silent
Same time every day
I’d watch you sit in the park across from the pastry store
It was my favorite
The scent of freshly warm bread
The tapping of fingers against a keyboard
I pretended to work to watch you
Just as you sat in silence
With no acknowledgement of the world that surrounded you
It was as if you were off in another land
Where do you go?
What’s on your mind?
Deep skin that glistened in the sun
Where did you come from?
One day you weren’t there
So, I sat and I waited
But you never showed
How can I long for someone I never knew?
Patiently I waited
Rhythms on the pavement grew closer and closer
Until the sweet smell of jasmine and vanilla engulfed me
There you were
Looking me in the eyes
Those ember-colored eyes
And then you spoke
